Argentina’s civic-military dictatorship (1976-1983) disappeared a documented 8961 persons; many others survived
torture. Human rights organizations in the country have used memory to articulate their claims for justice. Soccer
club San Lorenzo under pressure from the military controlled City of Buenos Aires lost their stadium in the
neighbourhood of Boedo in 1979. In a recent campaign to return to Boedo, San Lorenzo’s supporters have drawn
upon Argentina’s politics of memory. This presentation explores how and why soccer supporters translate their
impassioned stadium performances into a political campaign about justice, illuminating how soccer is placed in
the urban social fabric.
