LGBTI Rights: Perspectives and Experiences of a Ugandan Activist

Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera is a Ugandan activist who has been advocating for the removal of discriminatory laws against sexual minorities for over a decade. In 2003, she founded Freedom and Roam Uganda, an organisation which advocates for equality and social justice for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community in Uganda. Her activism is being undertaken in a context where Uganda’s 2014 Anti-Homosexuality Law threatens anyone labeled as homosexual with life imprisonment. Nonetheless, she has been unwavering in her advocacy for the eradication of all forms of discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. For her service, Nabagesera has received the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders and the Nuremberg International Human Rights Award in 2011 and 2013, respectively.
