Elizabeth Collinson of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) will lead an interactive TIM Lecture on intellectual property (IP). Highlights of the presentation include gaining an awareness of who they are and what they do, increasing your understanding of the various forms of IP (patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, trade secrets, etc.), explore the resources that are available on their database and the content of an IP application, considerations as to how an IP strategy may assist an entrepreneur in reaching their business objectives, what infringement is, some estimated costs, the general processes and time lines, and lots of reasons why having an awareness of IP may be important as you move toward your professional careers.
The interactive portion of the lecture will include a video and an open conversation about a less than desirable IP situation. The star of the video is Samantha Chang, a student working in a professor’s lab over the summer. She develops and implements an idea for a process control project with an auto manufacturer. Her idea has the potential to generate a considerable amount of additional income for the client company. The client now wants to file a patent
