Join us for a celebration of poetry and performance with artists ray ferreira, Taqralik Partridge and Carol Sawyer. The artists will perform selections from their own poetry as well as historical works by Baroness Elsa.

Exhibition co-curator Irene Gammel will then lead a conversation on the intersections of these contemporary artists’ work with the Baroness’ groundbreaking artistic practice, which was infused with the performance and poetry of the everyday.

This gathering is presented as part of Stonecroft Symposium: The Baroness Elsa Project.

Participants

ray ferreira is a performer of sorts. She is a blaqlatinx from occupied Lenape lands called New York, NY: the illegitimate EEUU. Another spacetimemattering/materialdiscusive (dis)continuity: the Caribbean, the Greater Antilles, Hispañola, the Dominican Republic --> Corona, Queens. She stays playin. The dance between materialitylanguage is a body, her body -where histories are made and remade. She uses iridescence, text, rhythms (aka systems), to cruise a quantum poetics. In this banjcriticality, Englishes, Spanishes, and other body languages spiral, dance, and twirl to to create a momentary turnup w/the grls; that swerve past white cishet patriarchy.

Irene Gammel holds the Canada Research Chair of Modern Literature and Culture at Ryerson University, where she is also the Director of the Modern Literature and Culture Research Centre dedicated to the study of modern women writers. A literary historian, biographer and curator, she is the author and editor of thirteen books including Baroness Elsa: Gender, Dada, and Everyday Modernity--A Cultural Biography (MIT Press 2002).

Taqralik Partridge is a writer, spoken word poet and curator originally from Kuujjuaq, NU. Previously living in Kautokeino, Norway, she is currently based in Ottawa, where she is the Director of the Nordic Lab at Galerie SAW Gallery. Partridge's writing focuses on both life in the North and in southern urban centres, as well as the experiences of Inuit. She also incorporates throat singing into her live performances.

Carol Sawyer is a visual artist and singer working with photography, installation, video and improvised music. Since the early 1990s her visual artwork has investigated the connections between photography and fiction, performance, memory and history. For the past 20+ years she has performed extensively in improvised music contexts and has released three CDs with her improvising ensemble ion Zoo, collaborated and recorded with American composer and trombonist Michael Vlatkovich and performed in numerous ad hoc ensembles.
