In a screening series organized by Carleton’s Film Studies program and Carleton University Art Gallery, join us for an evening screening of Ziad Doueiri’s film, “West Beirut.” Set in 1975, this autobiographical drama recreates the initial stages of Lebanon's civil war through the experiences of three teenagers: Muslim friends Tarek (Rami Doueiri) and Omar (Mohamed Chamas), and the former's Christian neighbour May (Rola Al Amin). School has been shut down and the city they love has been torn in two – there is now a Christian-controlled East Beirut, and West Beirut, run by the new Muslim militias and where the three friends live. For the kids, the political schism means greater freedom, and the kids find pleasure in biking, talking, and falling in love. But they cannot ignore the war forever…
This screening is presented in conjunction with our current exhibition Art on a Green Line. The exhibition’s curator, Johnny Alam, will be introducing the film.
The film will be preceded by rare and memorable selections from the Audio-Visual Resource Centre’s collection of 16 mm films, curated by Devin Hartley, which will be inspired by themes in Doueiri’s film, including coming-of-age stories and the role of artists in times of war.
