The German federal election on February 23 was called after the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party government. The campaign has been dominated by debates about economic performance and irregular migration. Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz, who according to opinion polls is most likely to lead the next government, has courted controversy by inviting the far-right to support his parliamentary initiatives on migration management. Some observers have raised doubts about Merz’s promise to maintain a “firewall” against the far-right after the election.
Join our panel of Carleton University experts to discuss the election results, the role of the far-right in German politics, and the implications of the election for Germany’s domestic, European, and international policies.
Panel speakers:
Achim Hurrelmann, Department of Political Science
Jennifer Evans, Department of History
Hans-Martin Jaeger, Department of Political Science
