Irrepressible: Creativity and Queer Resistance

CUAG and Qu’ART - Queer Arts Collective Ottawa invite you to a free, public conversation featuring Barry Ace, Paul Harfleet and Carl Stewart, moderated by Cara Tierney. It is organized In advance of 2019 International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

Four renowned LGBTQ2+ artists will discuss what roles artists can and do play in building resistance to homophobia, transphobia and biphobia and in raising our voices against past approaches to LGBTQ2+ history.

This conversation and community gathering is unprecedented in Ottawa, and a timely reflection on the ways artists, and their practices, reclaim queer narratives and work for social justice. Local artists of all generations and any artistic discipline are especially welcome to attend and, in the Q&A after the conversation, discuss their creative approaches against injustice and targeted oppression.

Bios
Barry Ace is an Ottawa-based visual artist and a band member of M’Chigeeng First Nation, Odawa Mnis (Manitoulin Island), Ontario.

Paul Harfleet is an artist, writer and designer based in London, UK.

Carl Stewart is a weaver and filmmaker who lives and works in Ottawa.

Cara Tierney (pronoun they/them) is a proudly trans artist, curator and educator, and PhD Candidate in Cultural Mediations at the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture at Carleton University.

Getting there
Woodside Hall is inside Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre, located at the corner of O'Connor and Lisgar Streets in downtown Ottawa. Enter through the parking lot off Lisgar Street. The Centre's official address is 355 Cooper Street.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome!

Access
Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre is an accessible space. The accessible entrance is located at the Lisgar Street entrance.

Parking
There will be a limited amount of free parking in the Centre's lot.
