In this talk, Prof. Mario Santana-Quintero will describe an effort to provide meaningful collaborative learning experiences to emerging architectural conservation and sustainability professionals at Carleton University during the current COVID-19 pandemic using digital technologies.

Santana-Quintero will explore the transition from traditional physical didactic activities to a blended learning approach and will discuss international experiences such as the Our World Heritage Initiative, International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and teaching abroad from Canada.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Mario Santana-Quintero is a professor in architectural conservation and sustainability with Carleton’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the NSERC Create program, Engineering Students Supporting Heritage and Sustainability, based at the Carleton immersive Media Studio (CIMS) Lab. He is a guest professor at the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (University of Leuven) and has also recently taught at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, Universidad de Guadalajara (Mexico) and Universidad de Cuenca (Ecuador).

Along with his academic activities, Santana-Quintero serves as Secretary-General of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and he is the former president of the ICOMOS Scientific Committee on Heritage Documentation (CIPA). He has collaborated in several international projects in heritage documentation for UNESCO, The Getty Conservation Institute, ICCROM, World Monuments Fund, UNDP, Welfare Association, and the Abu Dhabi Department for Culture and Tourism.
