We will together view two videos, Long View and Dreaming Birds Know No Borders. In Long View, Yoon invited members of her family to dig a hole in the sand on a Vancouver Island beach, to unearth layers of meaning—historical, touristic, emotional—sedimented in the memories often silenced by the beauty of the endless horizon.

In her newest work, Dreaming Birds Know No Borders, Yoon combines reworked images from a VHS copy of a North Korean film with contemporary footage of figures at Maplewood Flats Conservation Area in North Vancouver.

Jin-me and Anne-Marie will then introduce the exhibition and reflect on the themes of intergenerationality, memory and history’s hauntings, which resonate throughout the video and photo works.

Presented temporally on this website and as a series of events, Here Elsewhere Other Hauntings (an experiment in pandemic times) offers opportunities to gather virtually with Jin-me Yoon and others invested in her work, and to share in conversations across geography and time zones. This is the first of three conversations that will punctuate the exhibition’s unfolding online, allowing us to deepen our knowledge of the artist’s practice.

Participants
Jin-me Yoon is a Korean-born, Vancouver-based artist. Her work is held in Canadian and International public collections, and she was recently a finalist for the prestigious Scotiabank Photography Award.

Anne-Marie St. Jean Aubre is curator of contemporary art at the Musée d’art de Joliette. She is particularly interested in identity themes and cultural issues raised by contemporary art practices.
