LAYING THE GROUNDWORK OF GREENING ONTARIO'S ELECTRICITY GRID: A Distribution Company’s Perspective

Hydro-Ottawa accumulated an unprecedented amount of distributed generation in its distribution system in the wake of Ontario's Green Energy Act, and it has accumulated even more years of experience in promoting electricity conservation and demand response programs among its customers. Hydro-Ottawa, along with all other distribution companies, has been spearheading the provincial effort to make Ontario's electricity grid more sustainable. It has fi€rst-hand experience with most of the challenges (technical, social, environmental, political and €financial) resulting from the on-going revolution. How has Hydro-Ottawa contributed and innovated to change the way electricity is generated and used in Ottawa? How has it risen to the challenges? What lessons has it learned? And what is it planning next to push the limits even further?

Raed Abdullah, a graduate of the University of Ottawa’s electrical engineering program, has over 25 years of experience in the renewable energy, energy management and utility sphere. In his role at Hydro Ottawa, his responsibilities for the past eight years include: undertaking the generation portfolio, performing interconnection studies, advising on smart grid technologies and electri€ed transportation. He is an active member of a number of high-pro€le working groups that deal with cutting-edge topic areas such as Smart Grid, Distributed Generation, and plug-in EV Readiness.
