An evening of sacred music and masked Lama dances. After an explanation of the special instruments and the meaning of the practice by Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso, the Palyul monks will perform the chants and ritual sounds of a practice called “Chod” (Cutting through the Ego) – the large hand drums and trumpets evoke the dangers and difficulties of subduing the ego. Following their performance will be an exhibition of elaborately costumed masked dances called ‘Cham’ by the Tibetans, known in the west as ‘Lama Dance’ because they are performed by monks. In their slow meditative movements, the dancers embody the activity of the deities of wisdom and compassion as they dispel negativity and purify the mind.
All profits from this event are dedicated to the support of the Tibetan refugee children cared for in Namdroling monastery in South India
