Lawyers can find themselves in the middle of a media scrum, having to think on their feet in the face of difficult questions from journalists. Or your phone rings and it’s a journalist asking you to do a live television interview. Lawyers interact with the media in a variety of situations and in a variety of roles – whether it is on the courthouse steps in a scrum, a call from a journalist to your office for a comment or interview, or an invitation to a television studio to join a panel or be interviewed live.
Get in front of the camera! In advance of the workshop, lawyers will be given a mock case that has attracted media attention. Following instruction and coaching, each participant will be involved in two different simulated media situations, a scrum and a double-ender/talkback interview based on the mock case. Afterwards, participants will have an opportunity to view their performance and get constructive feedback. All of this in a supportive and encouraging environment.
The workshop agenda can be found on our website.
Workshop leaders: David McKie (CBC), Janice Tibbetts (Carleton University), and Sherri Beattie (Lawyer)
