Canadian children born in the 1980s were less likely to experience upwards income mobility than those born in the 1960s. This, along with increasing returns to education, has contributed to a widening income gap between children of parents with and without secondary education. Join Dr. Marie Connelly and Dr. Frances Woolley as they discuss Dr. Connelly's paper that analyzes intergenerational mobility using a novel data linkage between quinquennial Census data and tax data drawn from the Intergenerational Income Database. A key finding is that overall income mobility has shrunk less in communities that have experienced greater increases in parental high school completion rates over time, suggesting that fostering high school completion may help slow down the worsening of intergenerational income mobility.
