In a screening series organized by Carleton’s Film Studies program and Carleton University Art Gallery, join us for an afternoon exploring rare and memorable selections from the Audio-Visual Resource Centre’s collection of 16 mm films.
For this semester’s programme, we’ll be focusing on Norman McLaren’s ground-breaking and experimental approach to combining and synchronizing animation with music. From the kaleidoscopic dancing of colour and sound in his collaboration with famed jazz pianist Oscar Peterson in Begone Dull Care (1949), to the colours dancing to an Eldon Ratburn jazz composition in Short and Suite (1959), to the experimentation in Synchromy (1971) where the audio and visual track of the film are identical, this collection will show that McLaren produced some of the most inventive animated shorts in Canadian history.
Curated by Matthew Sanders.
