Each semester, we showcase a Carleton academic whose research interests complements one of our current exhibitions, and invite them to give a talk on their research.

This talk will trace the making and marketing of Canadian artist Tom Thomson: his myth and his art. Just as the artists and engravers who collaborated in establishing the reputations of artists and of individual paintings in 18th century France (shown in Making and Marketing Art History in 18th-century France), so too did family members, fellow artists, Canadian art institutions and patron Dr. J.M. MacCallum collaborate to establish and maintain the reputation of Tom Thomson. The talk will also reflect on how new technologies, such as the ability to print an art work on a coffee mug or mouse pad, allow for the mass marketing of art work today.

Bring your lunch, the gallery will provide coffee and tea, and we’ll all learn something new!

Dr. Leighann C. Neilson is an Associate Professor of Marketing in the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University. Her M.A. (Sociology) thesis explored the ways that new technologies were reshaping the nature and audiences of history museums. Beginning next year, she will be teaching a new undergraduate course, Marketing in the Arts and Culture Sectors, part of the Arts Management minor at Sprott.
