The Collaborative Indigenous Learning Bundles are online resources that enable instructors to incorporate Indigenous voices in their classroom to help students better understand Indigenous perspectives, history and politics in Canada. The Bundles are one aspect of Carleton’s response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s recommendations on integrating Indigenous knowledge at Canadian post-secondary institutions.

Many staff and faculty from universities across Canada have reached out to Carleton’s CUCILB team hoping to use the Bundles at their own institutions. The Bundles, however, are not available for use outside of the Carleton community. The Indigenous Knowledge Keepers and collaborators who have contributed to this project have asked that the Bundles are not shared beyond our institution. This, for them, is about protecting their knowledge. The goal of this session then is to share information about the CUCILB project for those who are interested in starting a similar initiative at their own institution.

During the session, Kahente Horn-Miller, the CUCILB project lead, will describe her philosophy behind the Bundles, provide an overview of the project, describe the resources (staff, community connections, budget, university support, Indigenous expertise, etc.) required to get it off the ground and keep it running, and share recommendations for how to initiate a similar initiative at your institution. She will also show some examples of the Collaborative Indigenous Learning Bundles so that participants can get a better sense of what a student’s learning experience is like with a Bundle.

Session outcomes

By the end of this session you will be able to:

-Describe what the Carleton University Collaborative Indigenous Learning Bundles project is
-Identify the resources necessary to run a project like the CUCILB at a post-secondary institution
-Recognize the collaborative underpinnings of the CUCILB project and the value of this intentional design
-Recognize why it is necessary to, and how to, protect knowledge that is gifted by an Indigenous collaborator or Knowledge Keeper to a project like the CUCILB
