Host Organization: Carleton University Art Gallery and CACE
The Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) will offer a birchbark canoe-making workshop during the 2017 Winter Term. Under the guidance of Algonquin canoe builder Pinock Smith, students will work to construct a traditional birch bark canoe which will eventually be housed in MacOdrum Library. The canoe will acknowledge the location of Carleton University as being situated within the traditional territory of the Algonquin people. The Wìgwàs Chiman workshop will consist of six (6) to seven (7) two (2) hour sessions and will take place at the Carleton University Art Gallery. Sessions will run on the following dates from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
February 1, 8 & 15, 2017
March 1, 8 & 22, 2017
March 27, 2017 (if needed)
Criteria for Eligibility:
• Must be a Carleton student;
• Have a vested interest in reviving the traditional art and skill of building birch bark canoes,
• Interest in enhancing your Indigenous knowledge through experiential learning; and,
• Commitment to participate fully in the program (attendance is compulsory).
If you fulfill the criteria for eligibility, please contact CACE at cace@carleton.ca to obtain na application. Applications are due by Wednesday, January 25, 2017.
Applications will be assessed and applicants will be notified of a decision by Friday, January 27, 2017.
