China has achieved high and sustained growth. However, wage inequalities have widened significantly and the share of labour compensation has declined. Also, increasing social tension arising from widening disparities has become a concern to the Chinese governments. The authorities at central and local levels have responded by introducing new policies and regulations, including interventions in the labour market. One of the recent interventions has been to in-crease the minimum wage significantly. A team from the Beijing Normal University (BNU) examines the impact of minimum wages against the changing nature of industrial relations in this emerging super power.
