The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa Centre on Governance and the Konrad Adenauer Research Chair in Empirical Democracy Studies, will host a lecture, "Populism in Power", with Paul Taggart, Professor of Politics at the University of Sussex, UK.
About the lecture:
What happens when populists transition from opposition to governance? This lecture explores the global experiences of populist governments and introduces a typology of strategies they adopt once in office. Professor Taggart identifies three distinct approaches: moderation or abandonment of populist rhetoric; institutional reshaping to consolidate power; and perpetual campaigning while in office. Drawing on recent international case studies, the talk examines how populists navigate the paradox of becoming the establishment they once opposed.
This lecture is an in-person event and will be presented in English. Researchers, students and the public are welcome to attend.
