Visiting with Morrisseau is a free public gathering centered around stories—visual and oral—inspired by the art and legacy of Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau (1932-2007) and Anishinaabeg medicine teachings. This special event is held in conjunction with the exhibitions "Norval Morrisseau: Medicine Currents" and "Christian Chapman: Run to the Hills!"

Taking place on unceded, unsurrendered, Algonquin Territory, this gathering welcomes Anishinaabe artists, Elders, knowledge keepers and community members from Anishinaabe Aki.

Join us to visit, enjoy food and share stories inspired by the Mishomis or Grandfather’s artistic and cultural legacy. You will have the opportunity to actively and deeply engage with visual narratives embedded in the work of Norval Morrisseau and Christian Chapman through immersive activities, including sharing circles, slow-looking exercises and reflective discussions.

Curators Danielle Printup and Carmen Robertson will also lead guided tours of the Morrisseau and Chapman exhibitions.

Registration: This gathering is free and everyone is welcome. If you wish to join the free lunch on Sunday, please email Danielle Printup to register, as spots are limited.

Saturday lunch: Participants are asked to purchase their lunch at “the caf” in Teraanga Commons (formerly Residence Commons). It is an “all-you-care-to-eat facility” and costs $13.91 (+tax) per person, at the door.

Sunday lunch: Participants are invited to a free buffet lunch in Teraanga Commons 270/272 (formerly Residence Commons). Please email Danielle Printup to register for this lunch, as spots are limited.

Complimentary coffee, tea and refreshments will be served on Saturday and Sunday

Access: This event will require moving around the gallery space. Light chairs are available. A microphone will be used.

Construction: A big construction project at the north end of campus has changed the usual walking routes to CUAG. Here is a map to guide you.

Parking: Visitor parking is available in the big concrete parkade (Lot P18), built over the O-train tracks. Directions can be found at cuag.ca/visiting.

Organizers
Danielle Printup is a Hodinohso:ni / Anishinaabe arts administrator and curator from Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg, QC, with maternal roots in Ohsweken, ON. She is indigenous Cultural Engagement Coordinator at CUAG.

Dr. Carmen Robertson is the Canada Research Chair in North American Art and Material Culture at Carleton University. A Scots-Lakota professor of art history, her research centers around contemporary Indigenous arts and constructions of Indigeneity in popular culture.
