EU Policy Talk, “COVID-19 and European integration: A European rescue of the nation-state?” with Dr. Scott Greer, University of Michigan.
When COVID-19 first appeared in Europe in early 2020, pessimists saw a potentially terminal crisis for the European Union. Member states closed borders and competed for supplies instead of showing solidarity. But within months, European disunion and national egotism had been replaced by a commitment to work together and major new investment in health care, research, and vaccines. Even when shared vaccine procurement hit problems, EU member states persisted with their new and dramatic level of health integration. Why did they decide to solve their health crisis together, and will their commitment last?
The EU Policy Talk Series is an activity of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence which is co-funded with a grant by the Erasmus + Programme of the European Union and by Carleton University.
