About this Event

Host Organization: FLEdGE

Carleton Professor Peter Andrée will be speaking an online webinar, Supporting Farmer Livelihoods: Research Partnerships for Action, on January 22nd, 2021.

Peter Andrée is currently Professor in the Department of Political Science at Carleton University, and cross-appointed in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies and in the Institute of Political Economy. His research focuses on the politics of agriculture, food and the environment.

Along with Prof. Patricia Ballamingie of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies and Prof. Irena Knezevic from the School of Journalism and Communication, Prof. Andrée is co-lead of the Eastern Ontario node of the SSHRC and Ontario government funded ‘Nourishing Communities’ research team (nourishingontario.ca and fledgeresearch.ca). This group undertakes research across Canada and internationally on sustainable food system efforts. Under the Nourishing Communities’ Food: Locally Embedded and Globally Engaged (FLEdGE) partnership project, Prof. Andrée and Prof. Ballamingie are leading a study on the topic of National/pan-Canadian Food Policy in Canada.

In this webinar, sustainable food system practitioners, experts, and researchers will explore the possibilities of policy dialogues, digital retail spaces, and ecological production for farmers in Canada. Panelists will present their research findings and recommendations from three projects including: (1) lessons learned from a community partnership on the future of farming in Hastings County in Eastern Ontario, (2) data on how digital technologies are changing the way that farmers engage in markets across the country, and (3) insights collected at a field school on the future of agroecology in Canada. Panelists will discuss the process of community-research partnerships, offer policy recommendations relevant to small-scale farmers, and explore how their work is scalable and/or replicable in other contexts. Discussant Bess Legault from the National Farmers Union will provide insights on how research can support farmer livelihoods in Canada.

This webinar will be in English with simultaneous French interpretation available.
