In our busy and overwhelmed lives as students, staff, and faculty, it can be a great kindness to sit down and offer ourselves a moment of peace and relaxation through practicing mindfulness. The basic technique taught in this session is grounded in Buddhist meditation practice, but it is secular in orientation and open to all. Undertaken as a steady practice, meditation allows the mind to relax and settle. It encourages our inherent qualities of stability, clarity and mental strength to emerge. This session will offer a short talk on the view of mindfulness practice – what it is and why we might do it – but will mostly be a practical instruction session actually trying mindfulness practice out, with time for questions and discussion. The instructor, Sheila Craig, is a Meditation Instructor with the Ottawa Shambhala Meditation Centre.
