On JANUARY 24th, 7 p.m, at Dominion Chalmers (355 Cooper St.), the Ottawa Transpacific Orchestra, the Jasmine Ensemble from Beijing, and the Ancient Chinese Poetry/Music Project from Shanghai & Yibin will showcase a set of unique musical and cultural experiences in celebration of the 2019 Chinese New Year (Year of the Pig).

Admission is FREE!

Performers:

The Ottawa Transpacific Orchestra (OTPO) is a new phenomenon on the Ottawa music scene. The OTPO aims to blend the unique and enchanting sounds of traditional Chinese instruments with idioms from the Western jazz, pop and classical music traditions. This group of young musicians explores new sonic landscapes, techniques, and modes of creative performance by planting themselves in a unique environment that encourages learning through first-hand experience. The OTPO is an alumni and student-run world-fusion music ensemble supported by the Confucius Institute at Carleton University in collaboration with the Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing). It celebrates Canada’s diversity through cross-cultural collaboration.

The Jasmine Ensemble is the first Yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer) ensemble in China to perform both classical Chinese and Western repertoire. The Jasmine Ensemble was established by Professor Yuening Liu of the Central Conservatory of Music. The acclaimed ensemble has toured and performed in several countries throughout Europe, Asia and North America. In addition, the ensemble was invited to perform at the National Center in 2008 for the closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympic Games.

The Ancient Chinese Poetry/Music Project is an artistic initiative spearheaded by China’s National Arts Fund, led by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, in collaboration with key conservatories and music departments throughout China. This project involved rigorous textual research about the authors, chronologies, and backgrounds of the music and poetry. In addition to this, members of the project collected information regarding public reception from various dynasties and provided contextual details of the works to reveal their literary, aesthetic, and philosophical implications and values. This project was successful in assembling an innovative and collaborative team of educators and performers of ancient music and poetry.

We sincerely invite you to join us on January 24th (7pm) at Dominion Chalmers (355 Cooper St.). There will be a song just for you!
