About this Event

Host Organization: Technology, Society, Environment Studies (TSES)

Are We There Yet...?
It has been a fantasy for thousands of years that we can use our
Technology to move our Society to new Environments outside of Earth.
Over the last 20 years we have found the potential of vast numbers of
planets that could house humanity. There is an awful lot of universe to
explore, so are we actually able to think about moving to new worlds?
And are we likely to find life when we get there? Or do we just have to
fix the mess in our own backyard first?

Dr. Peter Watson infuriated his father by reading far too much science fiction as a kid. He learned physics and math at Edinburgh and Durham universities, and joined Carleton University in 1974, becoming chair of the Physics Dept and then Dean of Science. He has worked at CERN in Switzerland, Oxford and Edinburgh Universities and spent two years in Nigeria. In addition to a 40 year research career in theoretical physics, he has taught a wide variety of courses at all levels, many involving innovative teaching methods. Although he retired in June 2008, he has continuedto teach, give public lectures and do research.
