Join us for the fourth installment of the year, where we’ll hear from two passionate experts, each speaking for 20 minutes about their subject, after which there will be a Q&A addressing both topics. One speaker is from the Ottawa-Gatineau community, and one is from the Carleton community. DOUBLE MAJOR is a fun and friendly way to stimulate discussion of seemingly disparate topics, and to make new connections between people and ideas.

War Art (Laura Brandon) and Addictive Behaviours (Kim Hellemans)

DOUBLE MAJOR is held at CUAG. Lectures start at 7pm. DOUBLE MAJOR is brought to you by Carleton University Art Gallery and the Carleton University Alumni Association.

Speakers:
Dr. Laura Brandon, Historian, Art and War, Canadian War Museum, is the author of Art or Memorial? The Forgotten History of Canada’s War Art (2006) and Art and War (2007), a survey of western war art. Of her more than 40 exhibitions, the most recent are Transformations: A. Y. Jackson and Otto Dix and Witness: Canadian First World War Art, which recently closed in Ottawa. Dr. Brandon holds a B.A. (Hons.) in History and Art History from the University of Bristol, England, an M.A. in Art History from Queen’s University, Canada, and a Ph.D. in History from Carleton University, Canada.

Dr. Kim Hellemans is an Instructor III in the Department of Neuroscience at Carleton University. She received her Master’s and Ph.D. from Queen’s University, where her research focused on understanding the biological basis of drug addiction. She went on to complete post-doctoral positions at Cambridge University (2004-2006) and University of British Columbia (2006-2008) prior to taking a position at Carleton University in 2008, where she was recently named one of Carleton University Provost’s Teaching Fellows (2014). She has previously sat on the Board of Directors for the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology, and was Vice-President of the Board of Directors for Amethyst, a women’s addiction treatment centre in Ottawa from 2008-2012.
