Beneath the Waves Film Festivals occur worldwide throughout the year. At each event, a handful of films are presented, highlighting both local and global conservation issues. There is truly no experience like bringing people together, dimming the lights, and presenting the issues and stories first-hand. After the films, the audience is given an opportunity to interact with local scientists and experts, learning about the important work that is being done right in their own community and opportunities for involvement. This format stimulates ideas, gets people talking, and leaves a lasting impression that simply can’t be achieved through traditional outreach methods. As part of Carleton’s 75th anniversary, the Institute for Environmental Science and the Fish Ecology and Conservation Physiology Laboratory are interested in hosting a Beneath the Waves Film Festival on campus. The films would run for ~1.5 hrs followed by a panel discussion related to aquatic conservation. Although based out of the USA, there is a Carleton connection to Beneath the Waves in that the CEO (Dr. Austin Gallagher) was recently a post doctoral fellow at Carleton.
