Carleton University’s Chemistry Department is hosting its fourth annual outdoor chemistry magic show. Light Up the Night with Chemistry in the Dark is part of Science Rendezvous (www.sciencerendezvous.ca), a national one-day celebration of science.

This free one-hour show features fun targeted at the whole family, including children aged six and up, with explosions, a look at the inner workings of fireworks, spontaneous combustions and things that glow in the dark.
There will be hands-on activities before the show, where participants can make ice cream with liquid nitrogen, encounter lots of interesting smells (including molecules that are left- or right-handed and have different smells), make slime, see some of the demonstrations up close, and much more. There will also be posters about the chemistry of wine and chocolate, as well as a tribute to the centenary of World War I with a look at how it was impacted by advances in chemistry and how those advances have reverberated through the last century.

When: Saturday, May 9
Hands-on Activities: 7:30 p.m.
Chemistry Magic Show: 8:45 p.m. (dusk)
