Presenter
Nigel Franks, Senior Producer, Snowed In Studios – A Keywords Studio

Abstract
Similar to professional sports leagues, there is a common misconception that game dev is all about play. Game development is a business, influenced by licensing, player salaries, and unexpected market changes. Large corporations make both informed strategic decisions and uninformed trips to crazy town that affect how game developers work and how all gamers play. The Work of Play provides an inside view of the business of managing game development, including industry pivots, politics, strategic planning and a few pro tips used by successful game dev teams to make super fun titles. If you’re considering starting a game development studio or entering the game dev field, this talk is for you.

Biography
Nigel Franks has been running software teams and companies since 1994, and managing game development teams since 2000. He’s has worked on or led the development floor of some of the most successful games in history including the Zelda series, NHL titles, the Need for Speed series and Marvel games to name a few. Happily back in his home town, Nigel is the senior producer at Snowed In Studios, Ottawa’s largest game development studio. He enjoys long walks on the beach, provided there is cover from other players’ sniper fire and plenty of loot drops. He doesn’t play MMOs any more as he already has a job.
