The Jean Monnet Chair “Democracy in the European Union” will host a public roundtable discussion on “Pivotal Decisions Ahead: The Dutch, French and German Elections in 2017 and Their Impact on European Politics.”

This event will feature the following speakers:

Arthur Goldhammer, Harvard University (French elections)
Achim Hurrelmann, Carleton University (German elections)
Edward Koning, Guelph University (Dutch elections)
Moderator: Stephanie Kerr, Carleton University

Three key European Union countries will hold national elections this year: The Netherlands (March 15th), France (April 23rd and May 7th), and Germany (September 24th). In all countries, populist and anti-EU parties are predicted to perform strongly. The outcome of the elections will be of crucial importance for the future of the European project. Panelists will examine the domestic debate in each member state and the potential impacts of the elections on both national and EU politics.
