In the span of two decades, Russian media has been catapulted into the modern information age, taking on the structure of the worldwide mass media system with its clear cut polarization between quality journalism and “tabloid” journalism. At the same time, Russian media discourse on both sides of the divide is clearly aligned with the four general strategies of desacralization, hedonization, culture shock and manipulation. Dr. Annenkova suggests these trends are tightly interwoven and interconnected, and while the role they play in the formation of mass opinion is a predominantly negative one, there are positive aspects of this development as well.

Dr. Irina V. Annenkova is Professor and Chair of Russian Language Stylistics, Department of Journalism, Moscow State University, Russia. Her work has focused on the topic of ‘media rhetoric’. She is author of 120 publications including 9 books, Chief Editor of the scholarly magazine, "Journalism and the Russian Discourse Culture," and host of the “Mayak” radio station Russian language program.
