A Day of Understanding, Learning and Action: Colonel By Remembering Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Mass Atrocities
Monday, April 23, 2018 - Ottawa ON –

As the officially recognized National Day of Remembrance and Action on Mass Atrocities fast approaches, Colonel By Secondary School, in partnership with Carleton University's Faculty of Public Affairs, will be hosting the nation capital’s Annual Ottawa Youth Conference on the historic date of Monday, April 23rd, 2018.

Students from high schools all across Ottawa will be attending this important event to learn more about trials and triumphs of people who have come to Canada as refugees. The issue of refugees and global aid is pressing, current, and imperative for Canadians to learn more about. Through this conference, students will not only be educated on this topic but will be inspired to take action.

The students will attend a keynote address, a panel discussion, and three workshops in order to get a comprehensive understanding of the subject. The topics that the National Day of Remembrance and Action will cover includes:
❖ The experiences of refugees of diverse origins and walks of life told firsthand
❖ Case studies on different refugee crises around the world
❖ The work of numerous refugee agencies abroad and in Ottawa

9:20-10:10 Keynote Speaker and Q&A, The Honourable MP Ahmed D. Hussein, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (tentative)
10:15-11:00 Panel Discussion “Child Soldiers as Refugees/Preventing Perpetrators From Entering Canada” with Joseph Rikhof (Legal Council/Professor of International Law), ICRC International Aid, and Terry Beitner (War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
11:15-12:00 Workshop Period #1
12:00-12:45 Lunch: Colonel By Students Will Display Their Projects About Various Refugee Situations Worldwide

Each workshop will be repeated once during each period, and students will cycle through them accordingly. The details of each workshop are as follows:
● Refugee Agencies Abroad and in Ottawa: Students will cycle through all Agency Resource Tables or hear a panel overview
● Refugee Recollections: Intimate groups meet with an Ottawa Refugee to hear about their journey
● Medecins-Sans-Frontieres Refugee Tent City Mini Exhibit - Guided Interactive Tour
