Lecture Synopsis: Increasingly, forest fires are having a devastating impact on society, both here in Canada and globally. Better and more proactive approaches are needed to deal with these fires and forest management in general. Professor Bruce Burlton, who spent 15 years with Canadian satellite communications company Telesat before joining Carleton University, leads a group of fourth year students in the design and manufacture of a prototype nano satellite which can demonstrate early detection of such fires. Professor Burlton will discuss the cutting-edge technology used to implement the detection system on a cost-effective CubeSat platform.
