Dr. William (Bill) Willmore, PhD, is a Professor in the Institute of Biochemistry and the Departments of
Biology and Chemistry at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. He did his BSc in Marine Biology at the
University of Guelph, his PhD at Carleton University under the late Dr. Kenneth B. Storey and his
Postdoctoral Research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston,
Massachusetts under Dr. Howard Franklin Bunn. His current research program is focused on the cellular
response to stresses, with an emphasis on low oxygen (hypoxia), oxidative stress and endoplasmic
reticulum (ER) stress. Recent research in the Willmore Lab has focused on proteins that traffic from the
ER to the cell surface (CS) and into extracellular vesicles (EVs), through the secretory pathway, under
these stress conditions. Dr. Willmore utilizes his knowledge and experience in cellular oxygen sensing to elucidate the mechanisms of how non-activated (or quiescent) fibroblasts and cancer-associated
fibroblasts (CAFs) remodel the extracellular matrix (ECM) under different oxygen regimes. The research
combines the fields of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Engineering and Medicine.
