On Sep 8, 2026, it was reported[1] that AI might have solved a million-dollar math problem. If true, this achievement would follow the heels of AI solutions to some other high-profile open math problems that surfaced within the last few months. In this presentation, we will take a look at the landscape of math, both past and present, and try to imagine how the math community might exist in the not-too-distant future.
About the Speaker
Dr. Kevin Cheung is an Associate Professor at Carleton University in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. After completing his Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo in the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization under the supervision of William H. Cunningham in 2003, he spent two years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow under the mentorship of Michel X. Goemans. His current research interests are discrete optimization and computer-assisted proofs.
