RE:DESIGN – “The Designed Walk: How Shared Journeys Shape Community”

Tuesday, November 25, 2025 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Drawing on her experience as a walk leader for Jane’s Walk Ottawa, Susan Johnston will reflect on how shared walks offer a unique perspective on the interplay between people, place, and design. This talk highlights the intentional design behind walking experiences and the ways in which walking together can cultivate engagement, storytelling, and community insight.

Chiara Del Gaudio will join the talk to reflect together on  walking as a research method in Participatory Design and on design interventions as moments in which communities experiment with possible futures.

Susan Johnston has had the privilege of hosting radio programs on CKCU FM in Ottawa since 1999. She’s currently part of the Board of Directors at Synapcity, an Ottawa organization bringing together people and institutions, as well as the Jane’s Walk Steering Committee. She has worked with Community Mediation Ottawa and the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution to help people and groups strengthen their capacity to talk through and learn from their differences. In 2014, she co-founded Ottawa (de)tours, a social enterprise with a mandate to help people explore and discuss contemporary issues, which operated for six seasons. She is passionate about using radio, storytelling, and walking to help people deepen their relationship with the Ottawa River, as a landmark central to her community’s history and present-day life. Find her on CKCU 93.1 FM | ckcufm.com early on Friday mornings.
