National Conference: Safe Havens and Knowledge Networks in Canada | May 22–23, 2025 | Carleton University

Thursday, May 22 at 9:00 am to Friday, May 23, 2025 at 4:00 pm

Carleton’s Scholars at Risk program is holding an IDRC-supported national conference to foster dialogue, strengthen cross-sectoral collaboration, and build sustainable systems for protecting global knowledge networks and academic freedom. The event will foreground the role of Canadian universities in supporting displaced scholars’ and human rights defenders’ contributions to Canadian society. Key stakeholders will gather to discuss the absence of hosting guidelines in Canada and learn from countries such as Germany and France, which have national programs for supporting at risk scholars. The challenges host institutions face in maintaining momentum and support systems will also be examined. Nahlah Ayed, host of CBC Radio’s Ideas (and Carleton alum), will moderate a panel to be broadcast at a future date. Bob Rae, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the UN in New York, will also be speaking. Register here to attend online.
