RE-ORGANISATION OF RETRENCHED URBAN WORKERS IN THE RURAL LANDSCAPES
Industrial closures have weakened labour mobilisation globally, including in India. However, Mumbai’s ex-textile workers have shown resilience, demanding housing and jobs while also mobilising in rural areas. Those who returned to villages helped revive unions and establish offices, leading to protests, rallies, and continued engagement in Mumbai. This paper examines their rural mobilisation (2008-2009) and itssocial, political, and economic impacts.
