How should we think about prisons in the global South, other than as ‘mere’ copies of a Northern template?

Can we approach these institutions without exoticizing them, and the extremity of their problems?
Can scholars of penal questions North and South thus embark upon a more equal and fruitful dialogue?

Led by Dr. Máximo Sozzo, this event explores these challenges through a discussion of the recent proliferation of forms of ‘inmate governance’ in Latin American prisons.

About the Presenter
Máximo Sozzo is a Professor of Sociology of Law and Criminology, and the Director of the Crime and Society Program and the MA Program in Criminology of the National University of Litoral (Argentina). He is co-author of Southern Criminology (Routledge, 2019) and co-editor of The Palgrave Handbook of Criminology and the Global South (Palgrave, 2018). He has most recently edited Prisons, Inmates and Governance in Latin America (Palgrave, 2022). His new edited collection in English (with Aliverti, Carvalho and Chamberlain) is Decolonising the Criminal Question (Oxford University Press, June 2023). He has published widely on punishment and prison studies in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, English and Mandarin. He is Co-Director of the Prison Transparency Project, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, at Carleton University.
