Canada is at a crossroads in international affairs, as the world returns to a state of multipolarity, following a brief period of global American hegemony. In that time, the United States was able to dominate the geopolitically sensitive and energy-rich Middle East: culturally, politically, and militarily. In this lecture, we will look at the role the Middle East is playing in this new global system and what this means for Canada. This is done bearing in mind the very close ties Canada has with the United States and Israel, and the deepening ties Canada has at a people-to-people level with rapidly growing Arab and Muslim communities in Canada, whose views are distinctly not represented in contemporary Canadian foreign policy circles.
