President-Elect Jair Bolsonaro appears to have successfully yoked anti-establishment populism to a far-right, racist, misogynist, and homophobic authoritarianism. Is this what ‘Não me representa’ looks like? What’s next for Brazil?

Dr. Charmain Levy (Université du Québec en Outaouais), Dr. Joao Velloso (University of Ottawa), and Dr. Sabrina Fernandes (University of Brazilia) will discuss the current state of affairs in Brazil.

Dr. Charmain Levy holds a PhD in Anthropology and Sociology of Politics from the University of Paris VIII. Charmain Levy began her career at UQO in 2005, where she teaches international development. She is particularly interested in social movements and political parties.

Dr. Joao Velloso is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law (Common Law Section) of the University of Ottawa. He has an interdisciplinary background in Law, Anthropology, Criminology, Sociology and Communication. He is particularly interested in the governance of security through the use of different legal regimes. His empirical research deals with the penalization of protesters, immigrants and drug users.

Dr. Sabrina Fernandes has a PhD in Sociology with a specialization in Political Economy from Carleton University and is currently a Full Collaborating Researcher at the University of Brasília. She researches the Brazilian and Latin American Left and was an active campaigner against Bolsonaro.
