About the Lecture: Security threats, environmental pollution, financial crises, civil wars and human rights violations challenge nation states like never before. Historically states approached these challenges with foreign policies based on power politics. Does this strategy still work? Which new strategies, based on considerations of citizen welfare, have been developed?
About the Speaker: Wendelin Ettmayer is the former Austrian ambassador to Finland (1994-2000), Canada (2000-2003), and the Council of Europe (2005-2008). Before becoming an ambassador, he was a member of the Austrian Parliament for 16 years. He is also the former Head of the Department for Bilateral and Multilateral Economic Relations in the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
