At this lively event you will hear from a panel of Carleton’s Faculty of Science most exciting alumni on their success after Carleton. Witness one VERY excited student as they walk off the stage being awarded on the spot $500 towards their studies at Carleton, courtesy of donations to the Science Student Experience Fund.

During this event you will be identified by color coded name tags according to your department of interest within the Faculty of Science, expediting your ability to mingle and mentor students in your related discipline, reminisce with retirees, friends and current faculty, and most importantly, have FUN!

Alumni Panelist Include:

Joel Farquhar
Joel Farquhar is an alumnus of Carleton University where he obtained both a Bachelor
of Computer Science (2000) and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (2006). For 17
years now, Joel has worked in the Ottawa hi-tech sector for a variety of product and
services companies. He currently works at Thinkwrap Commerce, a company that
creates eCommerce websites for some of North America’s most prominent retail and
manufacturing brands, where he is responsible for their newest division.

Gail Carmichael
Gail Carmichael is currently a software developer at Shopify and has been pursuing a
PhD in computer science part time. Before returning to industry, she taught computer
science to undergraduates for two years at Carleton. Gail was a co-founder of
Carleton’s Women in Science and Engineering group (CU-WISE), and has lead many
computer science outreach events.

Nick Lapointe
Nick Lapointe is the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s (NCC’s) national natural areas
conservation science and planning manager. Trained as a freshwater fish ecologist,
Nick completed his doctorate in fisheries science at Virginia Tech in 2010. His research
has focused on the highest threats to freshwater biodiversity, including invasive
species and habitat loss and alteration. He currently works across biomes, helping
NCC to plan conservation actions at landscape scales throughout the country.

Alan Galley
Alan Galley was born in Ottawa, Canada, and received his MSc. in Geology from
Western University and his BSc. and PhD. In Geology from Carleton University.
After beginning his professional career as a geological consultant he spent the next
27 years with the Mineral Deposits group at the Geological Survey of Canada. He
attained a position as a Senior Research Scientist before he became GSC Minerals
Director, leaving the GSC in 2011. Alan is presently the Exploration Director for the
Canada Mining Innovation Council where he develops university-industry
