Solar PV as a Service in Rural Peru with Light Up the World

Light Up the World, a Calgary-based non-profit organization already active in Peru, has retained a team of Carleton students to develop a new business model to attract private capital to finance solar photovoltaic home systems for a large number of rural, low-income Peruvian families. Solar systems have the potential to yield great environmental, social and economic benefits. The proposed PV as a Service business model will improve systems affordability and durability.

Curbing Campus Electricity Consumption Using Sub-meters

The Competricity Group has developed a sub-meter enabled gamification strategy that aims to reduce student housing electricity consumption through competitive challenges and rewards. This is accomplished by educating students on consumption best practices and intuitively presenting current electricity use in an interactive way, engaging students while saving Carleton money.

Coolings Runnings: A Sustainable District Cooling System

A proposal suggesting a multi-phase sustainable district cooling initiative for downtown Ottawa. Using underwater turbines to exploit the potential of the Ottawa River, this system would provide cleaner power to the Cliff Street Station--catalyzing reductions in GHG emissions and reducing cooling costs during the city’s summer peak energy.

Streamlining Mixed-Use Green Building Developments

Green buildings are increasingly becoming a feature of North American urban landscapes. The benefits of green buildings are multifaceted, resulting in economic, social and environmental returns. Streamlining regulations and codes, combined with enhancing public and active transit systems is essential to creating green building friendly communities. This project constructs a policy framework that when adopted, will address the most pertinent obstacles to municipal construction by-laws and provide a stratagem for green building proposals.

Electrifying the City of Ottawa’s Vehicle Fleet

We are looking at the viability of replacing some of the City of Ottawa's fleet with electric vehicles in order to reduce carbon emissions. The proposed reduction would come from fewer gas-powered vehicles on the road plus modulation of the peak electricity load in Ottawa's grid. More specifically, this project examines the technical, economic and policy conditions necessary for the introduction of electric vehicles to affect a reduction in CO2 emissions and shave peak power.
