Join us for a special screening of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, an evocative retelling of France’s iconic but ill-fated last queen, in conjunction with the exhibition "Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (1755–1842)" .

Following the screening, there will be an onstage conversation between Paul Lang, Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the National Gallery of Canada, and Andre Loiselle, film professor and Assistant Vice-President at Carleton University, on whether it is possible to separate fact from fiction over 200 years after the events depicted on screen. Was Coppola’s Marie Antoinette historically accurate? Does it matter? How does her film compare with Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun’s contemporary representations of the Queen of France? This captivating discussion will touch on these questions and reflect on the influence of contemporary culture on historical films – and further explore the glamour, drama and reality of the life of Marie Antoinette in the Palace of Versailles!
