Patent 101 will familiarize participants with the notion of patents and will examine the categories of inventions that can be patented. Case studies will be used to illustrate the benefits of applying for and owning patents. Attendees will learn typical costs and timelines for applying for and receiving a granted patent. Come for the workshop only or stay for a working lunch and Q&A.

This workshop is presented by Jeffrey Orser, who completed a Bachelor’s of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering, Management Option (University of Ottawa, 2002). Jeffrey has been an employee of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) since 2003. Over this period he has occupied numerous positions within the Patent Branch and the Trademarks Branch, including: Patent Examiner; Senior Patent Examiner; Patent Section Head; and Deputy Director of Trademarks Examination. He is currently the Manager of Business Development within the Business Services Branch.
