You are cordially invited to attend an information session and open discussion about the potential of community owned energy systems. The experiences and advances of the Ottawa Renewable Energy Cooperative will be shared and placed in a global context. Germany's renewable energy transition has been largely driven by community renewable energy cooperatives and Dr. Wieg will identify the economic opportunities that community owned, democratically managed energy systems can bring to Canada as well as the necessary policy conditions for renewable energy cooperatives to flourish. In Germany's clean energy transition about half of the total investments were made by citizens. Hundreds of thousands of people came together in citizens' groups, local councils and regional businesses to establish common renewable energy projects, especially renewable energy cooperatives. Energy plants are often launched by regionally based partnerships as well as installed and maintained by local service providers thereby supporting local economies. Community owned energy projects organized by citizens, farmers and enterprises give everyone the opportunity for ownership and play an essential role in winning acceptance for the energy transition. Citizen owners are keen to advance renewables as well as reduce energy bills. There will be an open discussion with questions and answers during this session. This event is cosponsored by 1125@Carleton, the German Embassy, Ottawa Renewable Energy Cooperative.
