The Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) is looking for participants for a collaborative rug-hooking project as part of Panya Clark Espinal’s sculptural installation Lost in the Wood, now on view in Human Nature.

Join artist, designer, and feminist scholar Lauren Cullen for conversations about layered objects and Canadian identity, while participating in the collective construction of a large-scale rug, mapping out a surface of Espinal’s optical camouflage.

Originally constructed from feedbags and recycled cloth, hooked rugs are perplexing art objects layered with meaning and history, appropriating old fibres to create new artistic expressions. Rug-hooking cultures are equally dynamic and layered sites of communication. Lauren is endeavouring to investigate hooked rugs and their layers of narrative, while seizing upon the communal and social aspects of constructing a rug over the course of four social gatherings.

This is a free event and both craft novices and rug-hooking experts are welcome. Bring snacks to share! There will be four gatherings during the summer and drop-ins throughout the day are warmly welcome.

Dates: Saturday, May 30; Saturday, June 27; Saturday, July 11; Saturday, August 22

Drop In Times: Noon – 5 p.m.
