How much of your tax money is spent on government contracts? How much fuel does a car you’re considering buying consume? How many permanent resident visa applications were received in each province?

Or, how about this question: if you took the data from Government of Canada Grants and Contributions, could you make a dynamically updated map of where newcomers to Canada can go for community services, for every city in Canada?

Better yet: could you use geo data to make a scale model of the entire region of Niagara in Minecraft?

You can, and people have.

The Government of Canada has released approximately 100,000 datasets from a wide variety of programs and services and posted them on open.canada.ca for download. This session will provide an overview of this collection of federal government open data, how it has been used and could be used in the future, and how the Government of Canada is creating opportunities for exploration and collaboration with developers and data scientists.
