Please join Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) for an informal conversation with Always Vessels artists Barry Ace, Natasha Smoke Santiago and Olivia Whetung, moderated by art historian Ruth Phillips.

Barry Ace (Odawa Anishinaabe) is a practicing visual artist and currently lives in Ottawa, Canada. He is a band member of M’Chigeeng First Nation, Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. His mixed media paintings and assemblage textile works explore various aspects of cultural continuity and the confluence of the historical and contemporary.

Natasha Smoke Santiago (Onkwehonwe, Haudenosaunee, Akwesasne Mohawk Nation) is an artist, craftswoman and student of Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) tradition, history and spirituality. Her hand-built and pit-fired pottery is informed by ancient Haudenosaunee motifs and forms, and her work can be found at http://storytellershouse.com/.

Olivia Whetung (Mississauga-Ojibwe Anishinaabe, Curve Lake) works primarily in printmaking, digital media, and beadwork, and her work explores issues of loss, entropy, translation, and access—particularly the limited access Indigenous people in Canada often have to their own languages.

Ruth Phillips is the Canada Research Chair in Modern Culture at Carleton University. She co-founded GRASAC, the Great Lakes Research Alliance for the Study of Aboriginal Arts and Cultures, and has served widely as a consultant to Canadian and international museums.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome! CUAG is an accessible space, with barrier-free washrooms and elevator.

Discount parking passes ($4.00 flat rate) will be available for sale at the tunnel entrance. Please see the visiting page for directions.
